Classic Hot Cross Buns

Ingredients:

  • 250g of all-purpose flour
  • 25g of sugar
  • 5g of salt
  • 5g of active dry yeast
  • 150ml of warm milk
  • 25g of butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 75g of mixed dried fruit
  • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp of water
  • 1 tbsp of currants (for decoration)

Kitchen Tools Needed:

  • mixing bowl
  • baking tray
  • oven
  • spatula

Instructions:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and ground cinnamon.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the warm milk and yeast, letting it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  • Add the butter and egg to the yeast mixture, and then combine it with the dry ingredients.
  • Fold in the mixed dried fruit until evenly distributed.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for a few minutes until smooth.
  • Shape the dough into a round bun and place it on a baking tray.
  • Using a spatula, create a cross on top with a paste made from water and flour if desired.
  • Let the bun rest in a warm place for about 30 minutes to rise before baking.
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and bake the buns for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
